Should Isolated Systolic High Blood Pressure Worry Me?
By Christian Goodman | November 6, 2009
As a former high blood pressure sufferer, I understand why this is such a cause for concern. Worrying if one might have it, worry if one does have it, worry that if one doesn’t have it, might they get it later?
In general, a reading of 140 over 90 is considered “high.” 120 over 80 up to 139 over 89 is usually considered “pre-hypertension.” The top number is called the systolic pressure.
How are these numbers relevant? The older we get, the more likely high blood pressure tends to be. Two thirds of those aged 65+ are estimated to have hypertension. It is believed that the increase in high blood pressure may actually start at closer to age 50.
If high blood pressure is not addressed, it continues to strain the heart leading to a number of problems such as atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries. Heart attack or stroke can then follow.
Other organs can be affected as well such as the kidneys.
The systolic reading measures the force of the blood as the heart beats. The diastolic measures the force of blood as the heart “rests.” The diastolic reading does not have to be high for high blood pressure to exist. If the systolic reading is the only high reading, then isolated systolic high blood pressure may exist.
The diastolic reading actually tends to go down as we get older, so the systolic pressure is particularly important. Of course, both measurements are necessary to accurately diagnose high blood pressure.
To confirm whether or not you fall into the high blood pressure arena, you should have it checked (and probably re-checked by your doctor.)
Feeling badly is not always an indicator of high blood pressure. The name “silent killer” is attributed to hypertension as many people do not even know they have been suffering from the disease until a heart attack or stroke occurs.
The fear of medication and the many side effects keeps many people from visiting the doctor even if hypertension is suspected. This is a fair concern and should be shared with your doctor.
Expressing this concern does not necessarily mean that medication still will not be prescribed or recommended. This is a key complaint regarding most Western doctors.
A number of doctors do not trust that improvements to ones lifestyle will take place (rightfully so in many cases) so medication becomes the “safe” answer to keep blood pressure under control.
I highly recommend my all natural High Blood Pressure Program no matter what type of blood pressure problem you may have. The results have been nothing short of amazing – in fact I cured my own high blood pressure with these easy exercises.
